Also written as "fanout". The audio equivalent of Lighting's Break-In and/or Break-Out, but with, usually 3pin XLR connectors. Sometimes the word fan-in is used, but "male fanout" or "female fanout" is more common. Rather than lighting's thoughts of breaking into or out of a multi-cable, audio goes by whether the device is used predominantly for input or output of a console.
Known in Australia as tails. Tails may refer to either male or female breakouts, but headers is also used to describe a female breakout and in that case tails is assumed to mean male only.
