THERE IS ONE MAJOR THING YOU NEED TO DO RIGHT AWAY!
Sit down and talk with the director, talk about what you think you should do and what he thinks you should do...
Just because you know what a stage manager is supposed to do by the book, does not mean you know what the director wants you to do... I have seen many shows that fall apart because by the end the SM and Director hate each other and are counter-productive. Each director has their own view on what a SM should and should not do.... So you really, really need to talk about what he/she wants you to do.
