Fresnel lamp base Broken?

Hello,

So as we were going through our fixtures and doing general maintenance we came across several lamp base issues mainly lamps being stuck. The lamps would turn and the flang would be in the correct spot (at least it seemed that way) but the lamps would not come out. While trying to get the lamp out the top ring popped off the lamp base (the one with the different sized flangs on it). Is this something that can be just popped back on or does this require a whole new base?

This might be a spring issue with the base and or a stop problem with the base. Either the spring is too loose - at times you can adjust them but normally it won't do any good, or the stops to the base got bent in by past people trying to remove the lamp.

Determine that in getting the lamp out. Will take some time, and been there done that at times.

What ever the case, the base is probably bad - once you do get the lamp out. And the lamp no doubt also needs work in not forgetting that.

New sockets are a bit larger than older ones but do have the same mounting holes in even if mounting screws at times are different. Be careful in what you are doing... often there is an asbestos pad below the socket with an older socket. Gotta take care in removing it and in cleaning the fixture when removing it.

After that and beyond, from grounding cautions of rivited grounds now loose, to in geneal Fresnel servicing and or re-surfacing.... well covered in topic I would think in a search.

Remember if doing so and perhaps as not mentioned, the neutral side of the lampholder in wiring part of it would be a good side to be at the front side of the Fresnel. This with lots of insulation about terminals would still be best to be up front as a practice.

Can you post a picture of the broken lamp base? It is possible that a set screw poped out of the lamp base. However if these units are old, you mostlikely need to replace the lamp base, to also be on the side of caution (with electricity this is allwayse best.) It is usually a fairly simple job and replacement bases can be purchesed from a lighting supply vender, Like Barbizon or BMI.
