Wanted: production master electrician for The Tempest at Kean University Theatre Conservatory

The Kean University Theatre Conservatory, in Union, NJ, seeks a qualified master electrician for our upcoming production of The Tempest. This production will be in Wilkins Theatre, our 750-seat mainstage proscenium space.

The master electrician will:
• Assist with the implementation of the lighting design, as conceived by the faculty lighting designer
• Coordinate rep plot strike, lighting load-in, hang, circuiting, focus, troubleshooting rep plot restoration, and all other electrics tasks customarily assigned to a production master electrician
• Collaborate with the lighting designer to ensure the practicality of the design
• Coordinate equipment rentals, purchases, and deliveries as necessary, in conjunction with the lighting designer and technical director
• Mentor and guide students electrics crews who are working on the production
• Be responsible for the timely completion of production electrics work
• Ensure that the venue is maintained in a safe and organized state for rehearsals
• Update lighting paperwork to reflect circuiting
• Attend all scheduled production meetings, load-in calls, electrics work calls, technical rehearsals, strike, and focus calls (including rep plot refocus after strike/restoration)
• Liaise with facilities managers and union crew regarding electrics work in the venue
• Perform basic maintenance on lighting equipment as necessary

Qualifications:
• Relevant, demonstrable experience as a theatrical electrician
• Familiarity with industry-standard lighting design software
• Familiarity with ETC Ion console
• Knowledge of DMX, signal routing, and networking
• Experience working with multiparameter fixtures such as moving lights
• Experience working with students a plus

It is expected that applicants will live locally, as housing and transportation costs are not included.

Important production dates:

Load-in begins: October 17, 2022
Focus: week of October 24
Tech begins: November 1
Opening night: November 11
Strike: November 20

Full production calendar available on request. Some electrics work calls have already been scheduled, but calls can be adjusted to some extent to suit the ME’s schedule.

Production meetings are generally held between 3:30-4:30 once a week (typically Mondays).

The stipend for this position is $2000.
