Lamp finial thread standard is weird.

Why the HECK are lamp finial threads 1/4”-27? It’s such an oddball when 1/4”-28 I would consider the “normal” fine thread standard. Is it some other carryover from the gas era? The rest of lamp threading is based on plumbing threads.
 
I can't answer the question but I can sympathize. lighting fixtures are beyond frustrating to repair/modify, especially for the things this industry wants them to do. Designer wants to hang a floor lamp from the ceiling and you gotta rebuild the whole lamp because you can't find a compatible bolt with the threads in the doohickey.
