There's another post discussing termination, do a search for termination to find it since you can't search for DMX. I think you will find several useful insights as to what might be the cause of you problem.
I KNOw this is bound to cause quite a stir, but if you look at Martin's gear for instance they say you can use mic cable but insist on the termination resistor
I think you will find that using the 120ohm resistor terminator cleans up a lot of the problems with mic cable, and that using "proper" dmx cable, reduces the need for the terminator
Now that more and more people are going cat5 it is getting to be less of an issue

Ah, I still haven't had time to go up and check out the terminator.
As far as this above post goes, there is still dmx being detected. It is like between scenes when I don't have them set to any color, but still connected into the dmx chain and power still running to them. It isn't the sound active thing on the lights. It's more of a quick flicker every so often.
