Design Lighting a Blackout

I've done this before and it looked. . ok
I put a row of par 16 birdies along the front of the stage i think it was about 10 or 12 fixtures and i put a nice dark blue in all of them when we had the 'power cut' I cut all Light on the grid and FOH and just had these birdies on.
It was a fantastic effect as you could just see the actors faces and it created brilliant shadows on the set behind the actors
Just another idea you could consider

When we did the show we had a blue during all the blackouts, but we just used scrollers, which doesn't sound like an option for you.
