Lighting System Design

In your kind of situation, which has happened several times, I install a basic sound, lighting and drape system and work on an agreed percentage of the door, and I get first option on quoting for extras on incoming shows. When the venue becomes viable they buy gear from me and I have a customer for life, if you can find the right company to work with this model will work.Free donations of new gear is a non starter.

your ideas are great, but as i have found, people dont like spending money on all us techs. And getting a donation of movers? they are not cheap. So i would be amazed if you do get any, but if you do id llllllloooooooooove 2 hear how u convinced them so i can do it 2! ;)
Good Luck in finding it.

Also don't be afraid to ask friends for old gear. Since this is a new venue, you obviously won't have people who came from it however I'm sure there are paths that have been crossed in other avenues.

Recently the university here received a donation of an ETC Smartfade from a casino in Las Vegas. The console did not handle the job that it was purchased for all that well and became expendable. Since the people in charge are from The University of Montana, the console was donated to us, giving us...shudder...three Smartfades.

Granted the equipment you might get from these kinds of people won't be ideal for your needs, it should at least allow you to get by until you can get what you want. For instance, the new Smartfade here will most likely go into a new small venue that the Montana Rep recently took over where it will most likely stay until something new is purchased down the line either for that space specifically or by the old national tour console when a new one is purchased.
