So with this new job also comes some new spaces that the company runs shows at. The Convention center being one.

They have in the South Building a pretty awesome setup.

These are just a few pictures I snapped while getting the tour. They have a very nice space. The only picture I didn’t get but will is of the console. A Strand/Phillips 48 fader across the top and a weird playback wing on the left.

A pristine amount of CD80 packs. I mean bleeping pristine. Like you could eat off them.

SO Numbers for you people that work at Strand.

I’ll update this when I snap more pictures the next time I’m in the space.

Should I be embarrassed to say I wish I had a dozen of those CD80's?

If you just need the modules then they're usually dirt cheap on ebay.

that is either the original CD 80 rack (AMX 192) or the next version CD 80 AE (racks were the same) AE just made them DMX and allowed architectual control
then they have put in the C 21 retofit kit

we have retrofited many of these racks, the C21 kit works very well, and gives all the new featutres, Web browsing, Vision Net ect

    as for Dimmers
we have CD 80 modules , abd CD 80 sv here if someone is interested.

1992 called; it wants its mixer back.

Seriously, it's nice to see things well maintained across departments. Somebody cared and it shows. It would be surprising if you found anything that didn't work...

And note the small white tape label below the hinge-covered red button. The button switches the PFL routing from headphones/control room monitors to *main* Left & Right buses. The label reads "Self Destruct". Word.

If that 4K is fully functional and the rest of the system is up to snuff you're in an enviable spot. Keep us updated!

edit ps - pinch me... are there no dents in the SM58 windscreen? I must be dreaming...

It is still very functional. And you know what the shitty part is, the space is wasted because of other “newer” theatres downtown.

Audio isn’t my thing but I knew I had to snap a pic for those that appreciate useful working vintage stuff.

I will be back Saturday for a graduation and will ask for another walk around.

So if anyone wants to see some more in depth pictures I will defiantly take whatever anyone wants to see specific.

For a convention center with a "theater" space it's vintage and quaint but 'shiny, new' is attractive and sexy. Are there plans for a re-fit or updating? A competitive upgrade is a tough sell when everything is so nicely maintained and functioning correctly, even if it was designed 25 years ago.

City owned, and the company I work for just does the labor for the whole convention center.

City maintains everything and we run it and keep the city up to date on if things need to be looked at.

As far as I know there is no future in a refit as the city would have to compete with the other downtown theatre spaces.

Under what possible circumstances would one want to route the PFL busses to the main outputs, I ask myself? And, in response, I find myself has no good answer to give. That seems like a very strange feature to include on a mixer...particularly as a front panel button, rather than (say) some configuration links inside or some such. Self destruct indeed.

"Solo In Place." A nod to recording, where the solo input is routed to the "big" control room monitors (not the little Auratones on the meter bridge) to the exclusion of all other inputs or the mix signal. And live that would be a very naughty thing... ;)

This is the space from “The Bridge” as they call it. As it spans across the whole seating area.

So they run shows from the bridge just by looking at the reactions of the audience?

That Strand is equivalent, I think, to an ETC Element; one notch above the Express; not quite up to Ion standards. We have an older LP here as our "backup board". (Read: only if our Ion fails, no one has one we can rent or borrow, and the President is coming in tomorrow. It may not even work anymore.)

Popular rumors claimed it was rushed to a trade show running Marquis software and the Palette was jokingly referred to as the Mallet by the folks behind the counter.

That’s a lot of dimmers for that room. Plus 80 ellipsodals on one of the pipes, so a lot of gear as well.

What’s this room used for ?

Now mainly graduations and some thespian contest once a year.

    A total waste of space.

That is a Light Palette Live. The LPML had a century array and only 24 subs. Built on Marquee s/w with a mallet.
