OSHA requires that all fixtures have UV shields to help prevent this. Sometimes those UV glass shields/lenses break and they are not replaced by the owner/user of the fixture. What SHOULD happen is the owner of the fixture should replace the shield or take the unit out of service. OSRAM is launching a full line of HMI lamps (1800W and below) with UV-block quartz, so even if the fixture doesn't have the UV blocklens/glass in place, they can still be used with reduced risk. These lamps will be different from the regular ones in that they will have a bright orange ceramicbase on them.
