Miters on Round Stock

I've got a bunch of pipe and need to cut miters on both ends (welding up some square frames). I've been cutting one end then putting a square on the bench and lining up that cut with the square to make sure my next cut isn't rolled out of position. Is there a better, less fussy way to do this that I haven't thought of?

I would build a simple jig that had a vertical rail at 45 degrees that you would then just slip the mitered end to, keeping the cut flat against the rail. This would keep your rotation coreect, and work as an end-stop for length.
