What is the black box near the bottom of the stand? What lamp/light source does it use?

Black box is the ballast, not sure on any of the other information also the levers on the side are for color, its similar to something i used in HS (it was an ancient peice when i used it) but it looks very similar although shorter and looks to have a few less capabilities.

Times Square with a voltage booster to both boost output and shorten life.

It looks like an early Comet
I would say that is an incandescent spotlight so the black box is not a ballast but is a transformer for some reason. probably a variac dimmer.
I would put the year in the 60's.
I think that I've run one of these spots before

Let's approach this obliquely, so as not to give it away:

1. More than 1000 watts, like a lot more?
2. Made in New York city?
3. Lamp pins larger in diameter than a #2 pencil?
4. Lamp has a mysterious powder inside it?

OK, that's enough.

Does this help?

Interesting that on the data sheet is a 901 followspot.

And here's a 902 in the attached pdf, but they aren't the same!

The clue lies in the family relationship between the Altmans and the manufacturer of the followspot in question, methinks.

But without the mythical black box...

Back to STUDENTS-ONLY...
What does the "the mythical black box" do and, more importantly, why?

I thought I waited an appropriate length of time! ...
Sigh. I guess we'll amend the Official QotD Rules: "Unless specifically stated otherwise, professionals are not allowed to answer (but may kibbitz) until at least one week from the time of the orginal post."
