Onyx (M-PC) now limiting its free software

For a time Onyx (was M-PC during the time) offered a generous 4 universes with their free software. Now they have a new license structure, which will basically limit the free version of the software to 1 universe. The next tier would be the Onyx Nova license (comes with NX dongle), which grants 4 universes for $300.

Bummer to see this happen, but it is still a rather good deal compared to most software with similar features.

I doubt this will be the last company to do this. Offering everything for free usually doesn't work out well in the end for the developer. They need income to pay for continued development and support. How many other manufacturers offer their software for free without purchasing any hardware to go along with it? Not too many, and those that do typically place restrictions on it as well, just like this.

You can't even download a 'free' game or app without ads these days. It's the world we live in.

Given how much the NX-touch locks at only a little over $500 MAP (4u, timecode, MIDI, OSC), it's still an absolutely killer deal. I program a ton on Onyx and have ever since the M1 launched back when it was Martin's products. Incredibly powerful and also very easy to learn. They've still got some serious quirks they need to fix, but they're working through them.
