Painting zip cord

I did a search for this but didn't find any threads...

I've got a few lamps with white zip cord that need to go green (awful color choice, but the designer doesn't want the white cord). I know spray paint will make the cord sticky for decades, but will a brush on latex or acrylic paint adhere to the wire without the sticky mess? Any other solutions besides paint? Will it take a dye of some kind? Also I'd rather not have to special order some green cord...

Order the right cord. Putting anything on the cable voids its UL listing. Though remote, you could cause the cable to overheat and start a fire.
