Lighting. A device for changing one lighting control "language" into another. Used when the control console outputs a different protocol than what the dimmers want. With the standardization of the industry on DMX512, not as prevalent today as in the 1980s-1990s, when the device was known as a "magic box," or sometimes "black box."

Note that converters are always defined as "what the console speaks"-to-"what the dimmers want," hence a DMX-to-Analog converter would be for analog dimmers used with a DMX console, and an "Analog-to-DMX" would be for DMX dimmers used with an analog console. This follows the natural signal flow from console to dimmers. (Not unlike how an Edison-to-stagepin adapter is a Male Edison and Female stagepin.)

The most common converters are DMX-to-analog; and DMX-to-AMX, such as Pathway DMX Ultimate Converter, Fleenor DMX1AMX, and Levition-NSI IF501.
