Of the three rental houses I use, the price varies from 7-13 dollars in the boston area.

thanks for the grandstage link, that gave me what I was looking for. A friend of mine is LDing a show in des moines and no one out there rents VL1000's so he was thinking he would drive to chicago and get them. He mentioned that the rental house out there wanted $50 a week for a S4 and I was like dude, f-that the rate is a lot cheaper out in the big market.
Wow it certainly is interesting how different pricing is. I guess it all depends on how much competition there is in town.

Really it depends on the order. If you are renting 10 fixtures alone, its going to be pricey. A lot of times when you rent gear, you are renting the fixtures, truss, motors, feeder, mults, motor controllers, rigging steel, dimmers, consoles, cable, and a host of other things. A lot of times if you rent 100 fixtures and the dimmers to go along with them they will either throw in the cable and interconnects for free or give you a lower rate. You are looking at everything as a total package. The more gear they can get out the door the better. The places that spec scrollers, PSU, and the interconnect cable seperartly annoy me. I'll pay the X amount a week for the unit, but I want everything that comes with that unit to be included in the price. Spare lamps included, for every fixture every time. So really calling up a company and asking their weekly rate for a given piece of gear can kind of throw you. For one instrument it might be high, but if you are renting how often do you rent two source 4's, you are usually renting 30 or more.
Yeah, but it's nice to know ballpark. I work with a lot of non-profits and low-budgets. Half the time I have to go back to the LD and ask him to revise his plot to keep the rental within budget. Or I have to beg, steal, and borrow to bring it in under. Most of the time we're not renting enough to get any volume discounts anyway, so it's just a pain to keep calling up for a quote and crossing your fingers that cutting four source 4s and two PARnels will mean the difference.
If I only had to find two total, I'd borrow, but there have been times when I've run through every contact I have and come up just a few fixtures short. Inevitably the LD just has to have them, and I wind up doing a rental for whatever small number is most practical and returning a bunch of borrowed stuff.

Rentals and deliveries with any of the above are dependant upoon how busy where you rent from is in having time for an extra delivery, this much less in general for mark up, how long the production and what's available given their own busy production schedules. Lots more lighting companies in the Chicago area also - Len also in having one - I would be surprised if he didn't own any S-4 Lekos yet. Busy industry means at times yes, they might make available some fixtures but it costs more. When not busy prices might be less. Where I work also doesn't really rent to those that are not known to us much. Often one might get a higher price on an initial rental or two just to pay for the lack of knowing if you will take care of what's rented factor. I know I have said in the past while getting a light board all full of plaster... "FU@& it, it's a rental." This in not realizing we would be charged for screwing up a light board or might not get such availability at a good price next time.
Than beyond all this, it can also be a question of what the quality of gear is you are paying for. Really have cleaned cob webs out of one of the above companies rental light fixtures. This as opposed to where I work, a rental light is treated like a production fixture in being prepped and factory spec. Always amazing what many rental companies send us - as if they sent their worst gear so we can fix it for them, or more like, this gear was not prepped at all or even tested, simply wheeled out the door. AT some point what might be really cheap might not work and require labor to make work in not making it worth renting cheaper. Sage advice but only after a time developing a sort of system for who has what and what to expect from gear given the price.
Than as with others - price for volume, what comes with it etc. Known in the industry thus trusted to take care of the gear also factors in as with length of show. Don't contact me, I stay far away from rentals other than pulling the spare lamps for them.
