"Safety" chains

This same space didn't have any safety chains when I started 8 months ago, so at least it's an improvement.

What seems a little sketchy to me is that clamp that doesn't actually go over the bar... (unless, of course, I'm going crazy and I'm seeing odd things, a theory which may have merit)

You are correct. The clamp is open on top. The clamping action goes side to side, instead of up like a normal clamp.

And it's obvious to everyone here why that's a bad design for a hanger clamp, right?

That's alright, when I started working I found our projector screen was hung from a batten using two safety chains looped over the pipe twice and twice over the dalite frame. Not fantastic when you're relying on unrated spring clips to hold a 20# screen.

I just recently found some dimmer packs hung with zip ties.........
