Singing Solo Set/Effect Ideas

Basically I'm producing a charity variety show on a tight budget, for some slow songs with have things such as lights hanging from the ceiling etc, fog jets for fast dance numbers. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of simple set pieces or effects that would look effective but could be made on a tight budget for someone singing Supermarket Flowers (a slow song by Ed Sheeran)

Thanks

A stool, a mic on a stand, a single spot light, house lights off completely and a uplight in a blue pink purple ( depends on what they are wearing.). Feel the room for fog on the floor rolling off the stage.

@Matthew Giles As per @Amiers above plus possibly a single very steep back-light, back-lighting the solo performer in a rich, lustrous, heart-wrenching color of your choice with its beam vanishing magically in your non-reflective, matte black, floor leaving the performer silhouetted for two or three seconds after you've faded out their spot light and tearing the audiences' collective hearts out while they gasp for breath and break out in a tumultuous round of applause. Optional encores and bows to suit.
EDIT: The performer's segment concludes with 'their' back-light remaining lit and the audience continuing to applaud. At any point, the artist is free to return to the stage for their 6th encore or 17th bow. You leave 'their' back-light lit until either the next artist walks on stage from either wing OR it's interval OR it's time for house and works as the crew enter with brooms, buckets and wet mops to prep' for the evening performance or tomorrow's matinee. Optimistically you've more than one color of back-light special for other similar artists establishing the concept of a specific back-light being associated with a specific artist for the run of the production.

Can you elaborate a bit more what you are thinking. Cause you said budget friendly. Which generally means little to no money, hence the stool and use of lights and effects you will already have.

Hi, so I'm just thinking simple things. For example, for one solo we are draping some fairy lights from the ceiling which will just be used for that song, another solo has uplight with a fan. So just a simple effect that would make that solo unique and compliment it. So any other ideas for simple set/lighting additions (such as the fairy lights etc)

@Matthew Giles An appropriate gobo, perhaps a rain gobo with a a home-made motion wheel?

Drapery taller than your stage, hung at fullness off center, swagged and weighted to the floor to create a "swoop". Any color other than black. Could also be done with a scrim, provided that yours is a traveler type and the batten can be brought in to give you room to swag.

Colorful oriental rug, jauntily angled under said mic and stool. Sometimes rug companies will rent them, or you can pick up an ookie stained one for cheap, pay to have it cleaned or hose it off in the parking lot. Stains and wear matter way less at 30'+.

Colorful Lycra panels, grometted and tie lined or paracorded into weird stretched shapes. Doesn't fray, so no hemming necessary. Overlap multiple panels on multiple planes and angles for added oomf. Check your local codes for flame retardant requirements!

Build a couple flats with the 1x4 framing laid flat. Paint the luan one color, the frames and cross members another, hinge so that it's all visible, and you've got a couple folding screens. Could also use cheapie beadboard paneling, and rub a glaze into it to pick up the grooves. Reverse side is usable later as a regular flat.

Embossed or anaglypta wall paper on flats. Add trim to create a faux Victorian flat/screen

Hemp ropes swagged from battens to offstage, can be accompanied by real canvas sandbags stuffed with something not heavy. Adds a vintage hemp-house aesthetic. If you don't care about reducing the strength of your white nylon ropes, rub them down with wood stain to get a similar look.

Hang lights from aluminum truss, even if that's then hung from your battens. Instant industrial chic.

My wife (the director) loves to have me wash colors on white silk fabric (say 3-4' wide), sometimes with a gobo pattern projected from behind. With a bar LED or cyc strip at the bottom and top of the silk, you get a lot of bang for your buck, and it can serve for more than one number. We've also put a fan on a dimmer to be able to add motion to the silk.
