SNL's Phil Hymes

How many lighting directors get a story in newspapers nationwide when they pass away? Not many, but Phil Hymes did. He was working until last year, at the age of 95. He started his career at NBC in 1951, when TV was just growing up, and joined Saturday Night Live in 1976. He also seemed to make quite an impression on many of the performers.

Phil made an impression on literally everyone who worked with him. He was a fierce advocate for cutting through bullshit and getting to the heart of the issue.

I learned this firsthand when Production Arts was proud to be the prime contractor on the last major renovation of SNL Studio 8H at 30 Rock.

This is truly the end of an era. We will miss you, Phil. RIP.
