Staff to Snake effect?

We are working on an upcoming production telling the Exodus story, and our props department has been asked to come up with an effect for the "staff turns into a snake - and back" trick. (We are NOT interested in using a real snake, of course)

Any brilliant ideas?

Some really good slight of hand.

or something like this. How you fit a snake in there will be interesting. Maybe throw the disappearing cane to the other hand and pull out a snake at the same time.

Interesting idea. Since it's supposed to be a wooden stick, I wonder if we can recolor the strips that the canes are made from to make it look more wood? I'm definitely going to dig into this further! Thanks!

Im sure you can get the plastic to look like anything if you special order it.
