The Revealing!

Make sure you have something to reveal. For the audience it is much more exciting if you don't reveal the whole set in the opening number. What makes a great show is only letting the audience see half the set when the lights go up and have them exposed to the entire thing by the time they go down at the end.
 
This may also be where creative uses of the set and scene changes comes in. Scene changes can be quite nice when accompanied with the right light colors and sound...I think it's particularly effective in tragedies.
