We are doing The Great Gatsby in October and need to find a way for the water in the fountain to turn blood red almost immediately. Is there a way to successfully do this with lighting, or other effects?

Try that search box up in the Right hand corner. type in 'Fountain red' or 'Water Red' <no quotes> you find a couple of different threads where similar tricks has been discussed.

Light is a reflected value. Water is clear, so you need something to cloud lhe water a little. (much like haze in air) Using low voltage pond lights, white and red will allow you to switch quickly.
