Automated Fixtures What is a prism in an ML?

Reading through the spec-sheets for some higher-end Martin Mac's, and some recent CB posts, I've noticed the term prism tossed around a fair bit, but nowhere can I find exactly what said prism does.

From what I understand, it splits the light into a number of individual beams, so if you have a breakup gobo it can be quadrupled in effect?

I've tried searching and the glossary, but nothing's come up.

Yeah, pretty much it turns the one beam into 3 (or more), so if you have a gobo, there are 3 (or however many that particular prism makes) projections of that gobo. They overlap a bit, you can't really adjust where they are though. Then you can have the prism spin as well, it creates a very cool effect.

Think of what you see in a kaleidoscope ... except it's more controlled. Theres a piece of glass (or in some cases plastic) with angled surfaces where each reflection comes from... so if you're looking at it you can tell the number :).
