I didn't know it's specific job but I am very familiar with the concept. A similar setup is used in AMF bowling machines, even now.

Ahh, pinsetters. If you find machinery interesting, pinsetters are amazing things to watch. Most people don't think about the complex mechanical dance going on behind the scenes as they bowl. I prefer AMF, but both AMF and Brunswick machines are things of mechanical beauty to behold.
 
I learned on old 87-30b machines with stepper relays. Then we installed solid state machines.
