Simple answer, move the mic. Your best bet is to experiment with the mic position and find the best sounding location. Probably a bit above and a bit out from the instrument.
I would also suggest against compressing the sound in this situation especially considering you are playing unmiced versus miced instruments.The blend should be more natural without compression in this situation. Gating the mics may not be a bad thing to remove some of the shuffling sound as people move around. Though if you do use gating or compression don't overdo it.
And as others mentioned see if you can get the school to purchase equipment if you really need it. Personal equipment gets broken, stolen, and a multitude of other things. Better to have the organization take a loss than you personally. And I would absolutely avoid taking the O1V into possible marching band conditions.
