In the Scenic Painting sense, a sponge is a porous material which is used to create a pattern or break up a solid color. Sponges can be either artificial (factory made) or natural. Most scenic painters prefer natural sponges because they create a more random pattern, not a machine crafted, repeating pattern such as one would get with an artificial sponge.
