Swing

Not to be confused with Standby and Understudy.

A Swing is a non-performing member of the cast who learns the lines and blocking of ensemble roles and is able to assume those roles when needed. Most shows usually have only two Swings, one male and one female, who cover all ensemble roles - however, large ensemble shows or shows involving complex dance requirements may have many more. Traditionally, Swings are not required to actually report to the theatre on show nights, but must be nearby and must be able to be contacted immediately by cell phone (the exact requirements for Swings vary greatly from show to show). When an ensemble member is out, or if an Understudy needs to perform a lead role, the Swing will assume the ensemble role.
