Crest factor is the peak amplitude of an AC waveform divided by the RMS value of the waveform. A pure sinewave has a crest factor of 1.414. A higher crest factor indicates a less sinusoidal waveform.

When selecting a true-RMS-responding DMM, crest factor is a good spec to look at, as it quantifies just how nasty a non-sinusoidal waveform can be accurately measured by the instrument.
