Digital Mixer

This is a general term used to refer to the new generation of mixers that have built in features such as effects processors; gates and compressors available on every channel; assignable graphic and parametric equalizers, motorized faders, programmable scenes and effects that can be recalled, etc. These types of mixers allow for the less outboard equipment and cabling to be used in an audio system, since these features are already integrated into the mixer. Many manufacturers often have companion software that is available for their digital mixers that can be used to preprogram files or edit show files on a computer when the mixer is not available, or easily accessible. This software can also be used to control the very detailed features of the digital mixer when directly connected to the unit itself.
