EISL

Entertainment Industry Stage Lighting Cable.

EISL was the original type designation for cable currently known as SC, SCE, and SCT. These Extra Hard Usage types are commonly found on single-conductor portable feeder cables. SC is a thermoset construction (PREFERRED), SCE is a thermoplastic elastomer, and SCT is thermoplastic. EISL was the designation before these types were adopted by the NEC.

Prior to the development of EISL, the only allowable and readily available Extra Hard Usage single-conductor cable was type W. Type W is not welding cable! Welding cable is not allowed in power applications of 120V and higher! Type W is a dual-jacket, oil resistant thermoset cable that is thick, stiff, and expensive.

Type EISL created a cable with a single jacket that had the abrasion and slit resistance of Type W, but with lower cost and weight, and with higher flexibility. The compound used in EISL has a "self-healing" characteristic to stop slits from running under bend pressure of the cable. Thus, it provides true Extra Hard Usage dual-jacket performance, but with only a single jacket.
