A Dutch industrial weighing and measurements company acquired in 2004 by Electronic Theatre Controls. PENKO Engineering was purchased for its sister company which specializes in sine wave dimming products, IES.

ETC is adding another respected company and set of technologies to its global family. It has announced the acquisition of Dutch dimming manufacturer IES. The purchase was finalised on 26th May. With the IES agreement, ETC further broadens the scope of its European product offerings, which already include products under the Transtechnik Lichtsysteme and Avab brands.

According to Steve Terry, ETC vice president of research and development: “IES has developed unique products that complement our current product offerings and provide silent dimming for concert halls and theatres. IES has been a pioneer in sine wave dimming technologies, and IES dimming will be an integral component in ETC’s total lighting systems. We will give IES products the market access that they deserve and give the market the innovation it deserves and needs.”

Fred Foster, CEO states: “IES and Penko have earned strong reputations in their respective markets. We welcome the opportunity to bring together the best people and ideas in our development efforts and leverage our combined technologies to meet the increasing demands of the worldwide market.”

ETC plans to dramatically increase the sales of IES products through ETC’s comprehensive sales network in Europe as well as introduce the technologies to North American and other global markets.

As part of the purchase, ETC also adds IES sister company Penko Engineering B.V., which specialises in the development and manufacture of high accuracy electronic weighting and dosing systems designed for use in process industries. Both companies share manufacturing, engineering and technical resources, which are located in Veenendaal, Netherlands. According to Jan de Jonge, principal of IES: “Penko is a critical part of IES’ success. We are very pleased that we will be able to continue to offer our products and services through ETC.” ETC sees strong synergies with its future product development.

In an unexpected turn of events, PENKO turned out to be a very integral part to ETC's Prodigy line of rigging products, providing the backbone for Prodigy with their load cell technology and industrial weighing products. When PENKO was purchased, ETC had not yet been developing Prodigy and did not know until later just how valuable their acquisition would become.
