1. Shielded Twisted Pair. This may be applied to Category 5, 5e, or 6 four-pair cable terminated with RJ-45 connectors but also may not meet the CAT standards if created as a "low skew" or "skew free" cable. This term can also be applied to other cables such as microphone cables. Contrast with UTP.

2. Standards Technical Panel. The consensus body for a UL standard that is responsible for authoring/approving the content of and changes to that standard. Typically, there is a separate STP for each UL standard whose members cover a balance of interest categories including: producers, supply chain, commercial/industrial users, general interest, AHJ, government, testing and standards organizations, and consumers.

3. May also stand for the recent rock group Stone Temple Pilots, or the fuel and oil additive Scientifically Treated Petroleum.
