The Sheet Bend, AKA the becket bend, weaver's knot and weaver's hitch.

This is an excellent bend knot to join two ropes together (or the ends of one). The Double Sheet Bend is used when you have two ropes of different diameter (sizes). This is commonly known as the weaver's knot partially because hand-tied fish nets are the Sheet Bend over and over again.

This knot is much better than the Reef Knot, and is thought of as one of the three most important knots to know (along with the Bowline and Clove hitch).

I've seen various ways to tie this knot, here is one:
It is important to note that the ends of both ropes should be on the same side of the knot. If not the knot will be unstable and weak.

  1. Create a loop in your left hand (if you are right handed) with one end of one rope.
  2. Take the end of the other rope and pass it though the loop
  3. Cross the end over the end of the looped rope.
  4. Bring the end of the second rope behind the other rope, and back up, tucking it under itself.
  5. Cinch as appropriate.
