A snubber network is an R/C (resistive/capacitive) network connected in parallel with a thyristor in a phase-control dimmer. Its purpose is to prevent false turn-on of the thyristor in the presence of fast voltage spikes. The parameter limited by the snubber network is known as dv/dt (delta voltage divided by delta time).
Modern SCR's and Triacs have very high dv/dt ratings and generally require no snubber network or one of a very small value.
