A piece of equipment that allows a lamp with a neck that is too short to be used ina fixture that it otherwise would be unable to fit in. Most people are probably most familiar with the medium edison base socket extender. This product can be very useful when attempting to place the wide-based CFL in older lighting fixtures.
In addition, when halogen-incandescent lamps were first introduced for the then industry standard radial ellipsoidals, it was necessary to produce the lamps with a built in socket extender in order to place the filament in the correct focal position.
