Throw distance

The length of an imaginary line from the projector (or luminaire) to the screen (or object being lighted).

Stage lighting: When calculating photometric information, the hypotenuse of a right triangle where one leg is the vertical distance above the object (V) and the other leg is the horizontal distance to the object (H).
Throw Distance = √(V^2 + H^2).

Projection: One usually wants the projector's lens to be centered on both the horizontal and vertical axes of the screen; so Throw Distance=Distance from Projector to Screen.
