United Scenic Artists of America, the union representing designers and scenic artists, in 1999, became known as IATSE Local #829, thus allowing one union to represent designers as well as technicians. Previously, USAA was under the jurisdiction of the Brotherhood of Painters, Decorators and Paper Hangers of America (later to become IBPAT, the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades), so a Broadway Lighting Designer could always hang wallpaper if the lighting thing didn't work out.
