Lavalier microphones (aka lav, clip-mic, lapel mic, collar mic, etc) are small microphone capsules attached to a skinny long wire typically attached to a wireless transmitter. They are typically electret or dynamic capsules, and are typically omni-directional.

Clip-on Lavaliers are common for Television, mainly for interviews and news shows. They are typically attached to a "beltpack" wireless transmitter that can be put into a pocket or clipped onto a person's clothes in any one of various ways. The lavalier microphone is a small electret (condenser) or dynamic capsule at the end of a wire and has a place on the capsule for a clip that allows it to be easily clipped onto a person's clothing for micing.
Typical places to clip the mic are: Lapel, tie, collar, strap (of shirt/dress) or attached to a "necklace".

Clip-on models are typically of rugged construction, and are often black in colour.

Typically in (professional) musical theatre clip-on models are not used, however smaller models specifically designed for body-mic applications are used. These have smaller capsules and come in a variety of skin-tones to help disguise them on the performer. The wires are also often coloured to match skin and hair to further conceal them.

There are many varieties of lavalier microphones and they are used in various configurations for wireless mic techniques.
