air gap relay

A remotely, electrically, operated switch (contactor) that energizes or de-energizes a circuit by physically closing or opening a set of contacts (creating an air gap--the best insulator). Important to distinguish from other relay types, such as an SSR, which when sent a command of zero/off simply stops operating but when given a "Full" or "ON" command never quite outputs a complete AC sine wave.
