apple box

A wooden, rectangular solid used in the film industry to temporarily elevate a light stand, prop, or person. "Standard" size is 12"x20"x8" for a Full Apple Box. A Half Apple Box would be half as high, 4"; a Quarter, 2". An Eighth Apple Box, 1" thick, is called a pancake. A 3/4" thick piece of plywood is a crepe. A 1/2" thick is a wafer.

The Full Apple Box is also known as a "Grip-to-Ground Adapter" (said derogatorily, because they sit around a lot).
