Beat

Beats are units that indicate a change in either the action or subtext of a scene. For actors a beat can be a single word or action, for the director they are usually much longer. Think of beats as actors' and directors' "cues" but instead of scenery, lighting, or sound changing, something in the story is changing. A close equivalent is the "French Scene" in which the units are defined by an entrance or exit of a character.
