Usually a turned hardwood dowel, although they can also be made of steel, which fits though holes on the PinRail around which ropes can be wound to "tie - off" a load. Originating on Sailing ships, Belaying pins are still used today in many theatres, especially those with traditional Hemp and sandbag rigging (Hemp house).
