Cinch

A word with a few definitions the ones we are interested in now are:

n. - a firm hold or tight grip.
v. - to seize on or make sure of; guarantee.

(of course it also means something that's easy.)

To cinch with regard to knots, means to tie an additional knot (usually a double half hitch) to hold the rope to make sure the primary knot does not disengage. This is very important with certain knots like the clove hitch, were you want to make certain that the rope does not slip.
The Cinch should be tied so that normally it takes no load.
