clinch plate

An 1/8" - 1/4" piece of steel plate placed under a piece of 1x wood used to bend the tips of clinch nails back into the wood through which they passed. Now obsolete due to newer fasteners, the clinch plate was used by every carpenter attaching corner block s and keystone s to a flat, Broadway style stile.
