dado

A groove cut into the face of a piece of dimensional lumber across the grain. A dado cut has three sides as opposed to a rabbet which only has two.
Dados are usually made with the use of a Dado Blade although they can be cut with a router, multiple passes of a radial arm saw or multiple passes on a table saw.
