A device used for dimensioning a piece of wood.
They are either hand tools or power tools.

Hand Tool
The traditional jointer hand plane is commonly known as a Stanley no. 7 or Stanley no. 8, though their are other other brands, like Millers Falls these never received the market penetration that Stanley hand in its glory days. These planes have very long soles that keep the blade cutting as flat as possible,

Power Tool
The power tool kind of jointer is most often stand alone unit (though small bench top models are available). They have two parallel tables, an in feed and an out feed, and a fence. The tables are adjusted in relation to one another to control how big a cut the blades on the cutter head take off.
