An actual Knuckle Buster is/was a malleable fitting that is installed on the purchase line of a counterweight set as an 'in' trim stop when it hit the top of the rope lock jaws. Its proximity there to the flyman's knuckles and the lineset locking lever has more than a little to do with its slang name.

Prevents the purchase line from moving downward beyond a specific trim, but not upwards. Thus used to mark the playing trim of the piece or goods, but not the "out" trim.
