lap joint

Typically, A manner of joining two pieces of lumber in which material is removed in a rabbet to allow the pieces to overlap.
Lap joints can be "half laps", "1/4 Laps", etc.
A Lap Joint is differentiated from a Scarf Joint in that it is typically used when joining lumber across the faces of the pieces invovled whereas a scarf joint is always a "butt joint" or end to end.
