Orchestra Pit

n- A well located directly downstage of the Apron in which the Orchestra sits. Many modern theaters have mechanically or hydraulicly operated floors in their Orchestra pits which allow the floor to be raised or lowered to increase stage area, or lower the Orchestra below floor level.
Often reffered to simply as "The Pit"
