Lighting. A device for changing one lighting control "language" into another. Used when the control console outputs a different protocol than what the dimmers want. With the standardization of the industry on DMX-512, not as prevalent today as in the 1980s, when the device was known as a "magic box," or sometimes "black box."

The most common converters are DMX-to-analog; and DMX-to-AMX, such as Pathway DMX Ultimate Converter, Fleenor DMX1AMX, and Levition-NSI IF501.
